Make heart-healthy Scottish mackerel part of your weekly shop

With Scottish fishing boats now participating in their traditional early year mackerel fishery, consumers are being urged to include mackerel in their weekly shopping baskets because it is one of the most nutritious and healthy-to-eat types of food around.

Available as fresh, canned or smoked fish, Scottish caught mackerel is packed full of heart-healthy omega-3, minerals and vitamins. Omega-3 is a type of ‘good’ fat found in oily fish and plays an essential role in keeping the heart healthy and aiding brain function and development.  A recent study also found that fish oil during pregnancy may help to reduce childhood asthma.

According to Seafish, grilled mackerel has higher omega-3 levels than any other commonly eaten fish* and is also a good source of vitamins D and B6, selenium and niacin, which are all important for our health.

Ian McFadden of the Scottish Pelagic Processors Association says: “Mackerel is such a delicious fish and so healthy to eat as well. This is why we believe mackerel should be a ‘must buy’ item in any weekly shopping basket. Indeed, health experts recommend we should eat two portions of fish every week, one of which should be an oil-rich fish such as mackerel or herring.”

Mackerel is also abundant around our coasts and the well-managed fishery carries the prestigious Marine Stewardship Council ecolabel in recognition of its sustainability.

Ian Gatt of the Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group says: “Mackerel is such a versatile fish in the kitchen and is perfect for grilling or baking. Canned mackerel is ideal for a quick and easy meal or as a sandwich filler, whilst smoked mackerel is great with salads and makes fantastic paté.

“Consumers can also buy mackerel with the confidence of knowing that it is sustainably caught.”
